P52 week 15: Sacrifice

project 52 p52 weekly photo challenge my3boybarians.com

years ago, when I moved in, I started some minor gardening in the back.  Oh, I’ve tried to grow flowers and whatnot back there but I’m never quite successful. The temperatures on that back patio in the height of summer is even too much for a container of peppers, I’m afraid–at least for an owner whose attention is spotty at best.

However, I did spend a season amending a particular patch back there.  See, the soil has so much clay that it’s hard to grow ANYTHING back there that isn’t already established.  But I amended and tilled and amended and tilled, until I had a patch suitable to plant two rose bushes. They are the straggliest damn plants I have ever seen–but hardy and thorny.  And I am usually lucky enough to get at least ONE bloom per season–but usually 3 or 4–but never at the same time.

So here’s the product of my season of sacrifice: the first velvety rose of the season…
